What Is Clary Sage?

Clary Sage is considered more of a cousin to the more familiar Sage rather than a direct sibling. Their scent profiles are very different, and each have varying apothecary benefits. While Sage is strong, spicy, and clarifying, Clary Sage is gentle and soothing with a sweet, floral fragrance. This herb is native to the Mediterranean and produces a really beautiful purple flower. Clary Sage is also known by the names “clear eye” and “eye bright” because of its traditional use as a treatment for eye health. 

Clary Sage and Aromatherapy 

Clary Sage promotes a calm and relaxed feeling when inhaled. According to Healthline, "One small study done on women undergoing a stressful medical test indicated that when inhaled, clary sage essential oil elicited feelings of relaxation and helped to reduce blood pressure." We often contribute calming to Lavender essential oil - but the naturally occuring wonders of Clary Sage can also positively impact your day. Clary Sage essential oil also has been proven to help with feelings of depression! 

Clary Sage and Women's Hormones

Clary Sage has been shown to also help with symptoms of menopause and menstrual cramps! One aspect of clary sage oil's composition is sclareol, which mimics the effects of estrogen in the body and can help when someone is having hot flashes (by applying diluted oil to the bottom of your feet). In another study, women who were experiencing menstrual cramps reported a reduction in pain after applying a topical Clary Sage cream to their lower abdomen. So interesting!
